# Any update on AnkiDroid's release status?

Hi all,

Can anyone clarify when AnkiDroid is likely to have a new release on the play store?

There was [a comment on Reddit yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/x5wy1q/comment/in3pxki/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) by one of the devs which suggests it’s not happening soon. And a followup post suggested that the problem was that AnkiDroid uses an obsolete and now forbidden way to access file storage. (captured in this GitHub issue - [Enhancement: AnkiDroid should not use Storage permission (Deadline November 2021) · Issue #5304 · ankidroid/Anki-Android · GitHub](https://github.com/ankidroid/Anki-Android/issues/5304)). I understand that Google won’t allow a new release until that’s fixed. Is that right?
